One of the largest employers in the New River Valley is growing again and adding plenty of jobs.
On Friday, Phoenix Packaging in Dublin announced it will be making a $20 million investment to expand its operation, adding 100 jobs, and bringing total employment to around 500.
The expansion will take place directly across the street from Phoenix in the former Dove Vinyl Windows factory.
Dove closed its plant in August, giving Phoenix a rare opportunity to expand nearby.
What made Pulaski County an ideal place for Phoenix Packaging to expand is largely just location. Right across the street from the current location sits an empty factory, an ideal spot to expand."
"It just happened virtually overnight," said Martin Faye, Phoenix Packaging Manufacturing Director.
He said this empty building will soon be filled with equipment and employees, with the 100 new jobs being created quickly.
"Conservatively we're saying three years. But I see it faster than that, I really do," Faye said.
Beyond the jobs being created Phoenix's rapid growth is also helping the New River Valley as a whole.
NRV Economic Development Alliance Executive Director Aric Bopp said Phoenix's success is a selling point when it comes to attracting new businesses to the area.
"It's excellent validation," Bopp said. "Anytime you have an international company locate in your community it says something about the community, the diversity, the makeup of the workforce."
Faye said hiring is already underway and initial production in the factory is expected to begin as early as January.

Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that Phoenix Packaging Operations, LLC, a subsidiary of Grupo Phoenix, will invest $20 million to expand its operation in Pulaski County. The company manufactures thermoformed rigid plastic packaging for customers in the U.S. The project will create 100 new jobs. Virginia successfully competed against Arizona for the project.
Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “In May 2010 I announced Phoenix Packaging’s plans to establish its first U.S. operation in Pulaski County. Less than one year later the company announced growth plans. Now, with this significant project, the company is expanding yet again, and creating 100 more new jobs in Pulaski. Phoenix Packaging is a tremendous corporate partner and asset to the New River Valley and Virginia, and continues to strengthen our manufacturing sector and add valuable jobs for our citizens.”

Governor McDonnell approved a $250,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Pulaski County with the project. The company is eligible to participate in the Virginia Enterprise Zone Program, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance (VDBA) will provide funding and services to support the company’s recruitment and training activities.
Joe Sheffey, Chairman of the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors, echoed the Governor’s sentiments, stating, “Phoenix Packaging has quickly become a leading corporate citizen in Pulaski County and the New River Valley region.
