The states jobs to implement a uniform civil code in the country and Ravi Shankar Prasad

New Delhi: Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday informed Parliament that it is the duty of the states to implement a uniform civil code in the country. In a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said Article 44 of the Constitution "provides that states shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India".

The law minister, however, said the matter has been referred to the law commission, which will come up with detailed recommendation after engaging in a wider consultation with different stakeholders. Prasad was to respond orally but due to a din in the House, the Question Hour could not take place."Having regard to the importance of the subject matter and sensitivity involved, and requiring in-depth study of the provisions of various personal laws governing different communities, the sa-me has been refer-red to the law commission for detailed examination," Prasad said putting the focus back on the contentious issue.

Responding to another query on holding of simultaneous elections for Parliament and assemblies, minister of state for law P P Chaudhary said the matter was examined by the parliamentary standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice. "The committee in its 79th report has given certain recommendations which are under examination of the government," he added.
